Tomorrow is our first visit at Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic. When we started the adoption process & realized that our little girl "might" have cleft lip & palate we quickly learned that one of the most renown clinics for cleft lip & palate is here in Lancaster!!! Amazing!! We had never even heard of the facility.
It is such a blessing for us to be able to have such a short commute & meet with some of the BEST doctors in this field! If (when) she has additional surgeries we will have to travel-probably to Hershey...but still, that's fairly close.
When we were in China & 1rst met Jyla we were surprised. We didnt' realize that her cleft palate had been repaired. (we knew her lip had.) We were prepared (or as prepared as we knew to be...) for her to still have an open palate...& all of the eating/speech complications that come with that. It was a wonderful surprise to learn that her lip & palate were repaired in the same surgery when she was 8 months old.
Since that time her palate came apart a little bit. So now there is a small (& i mean small) opening. She can't suck through a straw (or sippy cup) because of it. But that has been the only complication that we've noticed so far.
Most likely she will have to have surgery at some point down the road to completely close that. & probably some orthodontic work because her gum line appears to be .........i'll just say interesting! =)
oh, & maybe some speech therapy.
Tomorrow we have a 2-3 hr. appt & at that time will meet with 8 DIFFERENT DOCTORS! (so much better than 8 separate appts.) After that we will have a much better idea of what comes next in regards to her palate.
Isn't she such a sweetie!!!! We have been told that the doctor who repaired her lip did a really good job! We don't even notice it!
